NCIS L.A star Daniela Ruah explains Deeks and Kensi absence: ‘In Four Episodes’

Daniela Ruah, star of NCIS: Los Angeles, has finally addressed one of the most pressing questions on fans’ minds following some unexpected developments for Deeks and Kensi this season.

The hit CBS spin-14th off’s season is still going strong, but some viewers who tune in each week have been disappointed by a particular aspect of the NCIS team’s most recent missions. Daniela Ruah, longtime star and now director of NCIS: Los Angeles, recently provided some much-needed clarification for the current episode’s glaring character absences.

Daniela has explained why Kensi Blye and her husband Marty Deeks (played by Eric Christian Olsen) have been missing from recent NCIS: LA episodes.

Some episodes have also omitted core NCIS agents G Callen (Chris O’Donnell) and Sam Hanna (LL Cool J).

Although cast members have previously been absent from episodes, it was never as frequently as in season 14, and fans were always given an explanation for their absence.

The actress has now assured viewers that this is simply a new format adopted by the showrunners for this season, and that no agents are considering leaving permanently.

When asked about Deeks and Kensi’s recent disappearance, she explained, “That’s a showrunner and a writer’s question.”

“What the audience probably doesn’t realize is that each of us [on the cast] is now out of four episodes per season.”

This means that main cast members Chris and LL Cool J, as well as Gerald McRaney, Medalion Rahimi, and Caleb Castille, could go missing four times this season.

While fans may be disappointed that their favorite agents will not be participating in every mission, it also means the cast will be able to take a well-deserved break from the series’ demanding shooting schedule.

“That’s just a structural, logistical thing our show is doing right now,” Daniela explained to TV Line.

“So, at first, it’s like, “Oh, they had to take Rosa somewhere,” as a justification.

“However, that is essentially why there will be episodes where some characters are simply not present.”

In the most recent episode, Flesh and Blood, Deeks and his family were visited by his mother, Roberta (Pamela Reed).

She was in town to see their newly adopted daughter, Rosa (Natalia Del Riego), a teenage girl the couple has been caring for since they met on a dangerous border mission.

Daniela also directed this episode, her fifth for the series after they were absent the previous week.

Her NCIS responsibilities will not end there, as she will be filming the highly anticipated three-way crossover with the flagship series and NCIS: Hawaii.

“Of course, I can’t say too much about the crossover or who’s going where, but I believe we’re all in those episodes,” she teased.

“Those aren’t episodes in which someone [from the NCIS: LA cast] is absent.”

“Remember how we were just talking about how we each have four episodes a season? Those crossovers will not happen for anyone.”

Thankfully, it appears that every major NCIS character will have a key role to play in the crossover, so fans won’t have to worry about missing out on any of their favorite characters.
